Babies, as my mother once said, come when they want. Here are some small-but-perfectly-formed newborn gift ideas for preemies.
Gifts for Tiny Newborns
Clothes are the most obvious useful gift for babies who had no interest in waiting for their due date, since preemies are usually swamped by even the ‘newborn’ sizes that parents buy in advance. Zutano has a gorgeous range of clothes in sizes down to ‘preemie’. Best of all, their clothes come in the most amazing patterns. Little Me also sell some seriously cute onesie and hat sets for very little babies.
If you know that everyone else has already bought the essential newborn gifts, then you might be the hero of the hour with some simple scratch mitts. On a full sized newborn these damn things ping off every thirty seconds, leaving sharp new baby nails exposed. With a premature baby, no ordinary scratch mitts will do. Luckily, BabyPrem make mittens for even the tiniest claws.
Gifts for NICU Babies
Unfortunately, many surprise arrivals have to spend some time in the NICU before they can come home. A few thoughtful gifts can make this tense time much easier on everybody. Check the hospital’s policies on what’s allowed/appropriate for the individual baby first, though, since they may have restrictions for hygiene and developmental reasons.
Clothing is still a very useful gift for a newborn in intensive care. Ordinary baby clothes can make life difficult for parents and medical staff as they can get in the way of monitoring equipment, so giving some special incubator sleepsuits could be the perfect fit. Jacqui’s Preemie Pride sell lots of different styles of machine-friendly garments in bright colours and patterns guaranteed to be the envy of the ward.
When time for cuddling is limited or impossible, finding ways to bond become vital. Music and scent can be great for making connections. While some places sell sets of blankets which can be rotated between babies, mums and dads so that the newborn can get used to the smell of their parents, a nice set of muslin squares would probably work just as well.
Music is thought to help the development of babies in NICU and cushion the impact of the strange noises around them. If you know the parents are musically inclined, an instrument could make a great gift for a newborn. If they’re tone deaf, just take a CD player for the sake of everyone else on the ward.
For mothers and fathers waiting anxiously in intensive care, a few creature comforts go a long way. Magazines and books to pass the time or even a home cooked meal will be gratefully received. They’ll also be washing their hands a lot so a good quality hand cream could be very helpful.
